WCO and CLDP successfully deliver joint integrity action plan for the Afghan Customs Department

Building on a two year history of collaboration between the WCO and the Afghan Customs Department (ACD), Ministry of Finance, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the WCO - working in close collaboration with the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP), United States Department of Commerce successfully delivered an integrity action plan for the ACD. Building on Afghanistan’s accession to the Arusha Declaration on Customs Integrity in July 2017, the integrity action plan is part of the ACD’s wider strategic plan for 2018 - 2022.

East and Southern Africa Region Governing Council Meeting in Kigali, Rwanda

At the invitation of Mr. Dicksons Kateshumbwa, Vice-Chair for the WCO East and Southern Africa Region and Commissioner of Customs, Uganda Revenue Authority, WCO Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya attended the 23rd East and Southern Africa Region Governing Council Meeting, held in Kigali, Rwanda on 3 and 4 May 2018.

ASEAN Directors-General of Customs Meeting

At the invitation of Mr. Dato Subromaniam Tholasy, Director General of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, WCO Secretary General, visited Langkawi, Malaysia on 1 May 2018 to meet Members of the 10 ASEAN countries attending the 2018 ASEAN Directors-General of Customs Meeting, which was held under the chairmanship of Mr. Tholasy.

Asia Pacific Regional Workshop on Environmental Issues concludes successfully

A Workshop on Green Customs matters was conducted from 23 to 27 April 2018 at the WCO Regional Training Centre in Shanghai, China with 60 Customs officers from 20 different WCO Member administrations in attendance. The event was sponsored by China Customs and co-organized with the WCO, who also acted as the facilitator. This important regional event was opened by China’s Vice-Minister for Customs, H.E. Mr. Zou Zhiwu, who, in his keynote speech, stressed China’s support for WCO operations. He expressed the wish to see all Customs administrations, especially those in the Asia Pacific region, join forces in combating the scourge of illegal waste shipments and other “green” Customs-related offences.

Container Control Programme provided Theoretical Training in Oman

From 29 April to 10 May, the Sultanate of Oman hosted the Theoretical Training in the framework of the UNODC-WCO Container Control Programme (CCP) in Salalah. Oman joined the programme in 2016 as the first country of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).The training was conducted by WCO technical experts who have already working experience in Oman. It was intended to support the establishment of a specialized Port Control Unit (PCU) at the Port of Salalah, the second PCU after the first one was established in the Port of Sohar.

The WCO organized a regional Accreditation Workshop for Post-Clearance Audit (PCA) Technical and Operational Advisors for MENA Region in Muscat, Oman from 22 to 26 April 2018.

Successful 3rd WCO Leadership and Management Development Workshop in Uganda

As part of Capacity Building, WCO organized a Leadership and Management Development (LMD) Workshop from 15 to 26 April 2018 for 20 senior managers of the Uganda Revenue Authority. The overall objective of the two-week interactive workshop was to strengthen senior management capacity to lead and drive reforms within URA. With this third LMD Workshop for URA almost all senior management of URA has participated in a LMD Workshop. It is one of URA highest priorities to install a new management culture that focuses on managing more strategically, excellent people management skills and modern leadership and management skills, attitude and behaviour.

WCO conducted a National Workshop on Post Clearance Audit (PCA) for the Islamic Republic of Iran

Following a request from the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), WCO experts conducted a National Workshop on Post Clearance Audit (PCA) from 15 to 19 April 2018 in Tehran under the sponsorship of the Japanese Customs Co-operation Fund (CCF/Japan).

WCO conducts a Diagnostic mission on Post Clearance Audit for Jordan

The Customs administration of Jordan invited the WCO Secretariat to conduct a PCA diagnostic mission to implement an effective PCA infrastructure in line with the recommendations of the WCO PCA Guidelines and the requirements of the World Trade Organization’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA).

Members voice concerns over rising trade tensions, underline support for WTO

Forty-one members of the World Trade Organization issued a joint statement on 8 May expressing concerns over rising trade tensions and risks of escalating protectionism. The statement, delivered to a meeting of the WTO’s General Council, calls on governments to resolve their differences through dialogue and cooperation, including through the WTO.

At a meeting of the full WTO membership today (7 May), Director-General Roberto Azevêdo urged members to step up their engagement towards tackling a number of systemic challenges. The Director-General also reported on his recent consultations with members on a range of issues.

Appellate Body chair calls for “constructive dialogue” on addressing dispute settlement concerns

The chair of the WTO’s Appellate Body called on WTO members to assume shared responsibility in order to maintain and preserve the trust and credibility that the WTO dispute settlement system in general, and the Appellate Body in particular, have built up over more than twenty years.

Members intensify work to ensure full implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement

WTO members intensified work to ensure the full implementation of the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) at the 2 May meeting of the Committee on Trade Facilitation, which was followed by a dedicated session on technical assistance and support for capacity building. Members also elected a new Committee chair, Ambassador Dalia Kadišiene (Lithuania).

Winners of small business video competition attend training session at Google HQ

The three small business winners of an international video competition launched by Google in partnership with the WTO and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) travelled to Mountain View, California, on 2 May to participate in a ‘master class’ in digital skills for export organized by Google and tailored to small businesses. The visit to Google headquarters was the prize for winning the “Small Businesses Going Global Video Challenge” launched last year. The video competition was the first successful proposal under the ICC/WTO Small Business Champions initiative.
